Fifteen generations of the Mellerio family have ruled over the House since it set up in Paris in 1515 and obtained permission, by a royal decree signed in 1613 by Marie de Medicis, Regent of France, to trade in precious objects. While Mellerio was the official jeweller to Marie-Antoinette, the House also enjoyed the patronage of other royal and prestigious families (Empress Josephine and the imperial court, the courts of Spain, Russia, Italy, Belgium, the Orleans and Rothschild families, etc.) who, century after century, sought out raiment worthy of their rank. The House today still boasts a diverse clientele from the world over.

A double heritage, Italian and French, enriches the Mellerio spirit. The talent of the Mellerio master craftsmen corresponds to the vision of Régis Camus. "In 1997, we had not yet announced a vintage. I had, however, found a source of inspiration in all the wines and decided to produce a very small quantity of a cuvee (interpretation) of Rare Champagne. I decided to produce this only in magnums: a real first for Rare Champagne! I let it mature in my most secret cellar. Several months ago, I tasted it.

It had become extraordinary without surrendering the Rare Champagne style. Unlike the other Rare Champagne cuvees, the fact that no sugar had been added gave the wine an original identity, enhanced by a second fermentation of more than twenty years. And so was born Rare Le Secret, the most intimate of my cuvees."
