"A very fine bottling at natural cask-strength from Islay’s lost distillery, full of flavour and with great texture, depth and verve. Complex, rich and rounded on the nose, with soft pear fruit over a driftwood bonfire, then sandy notes, fresh shellfish and samphire. Firm bodied, the palate is surprisingly sweet at first, then the smoke dominates, but the character always remains pure Port Ellen. Adding water brings up extra virgin olive oil and produces a fine soft texture on the palate.
Closed four years after this malt was made, Port Ellen distillery became widely known after 1836 when owner, John Ramsay, pioneered whisky exports to America, shipping single malt from the quay. The first spirit safe was introduced here in 1824, years before their general adoption, as was Scotland’s first one-site duty-free bonded warehouse in 1848. Listed buildings now, Port Ellen’s old warehouse lives on.
